Notes from the Nest: Hypnobirth: Less chakras, more science.

We met this month with Tracy Sealey of BirthSense, to discuss her work and its profound impact on maternal wellbeing…
MM: Hi Tracy, great to meet you – please introduce yourself in a couple of sentences.
Tracy: I’m Tracy Sealey, a doula and educator passionate about supporting families to feel confident, informed and truly listened to as they welcome their babies. My journey into this work began with a fascination for how birth shapes our lives, and it’s led me to combine practical, evidence-based knowledge with a warm, steady presence. Alongside my doula practice, I teach for the charity Birthrights, travelling across England to deliver workshops on human rights in maternity care for midwives and doctors.
MM: What do you wish more women understood about birth?
Tracy: I wish more women understood just how much choice they have in birth. Too often people feel that maternity care follows a fixed pathway, when in reality there are always options, and every step is a decision, not something handed down. For example, something as common as induction is often presented as routine, but it is always a choice; and one that looks different depending on your priorities. When women know their rights and have access to clear, evidence-based information, they can approach birth with confidence and a sense of control. That knowledge, combined with the right support, can transform the experience from something overwhelming into something profoundly positive and empowering.
“Women deserve clear, balanced information and genuine support for their decisions”
MM: Tell us about a personal or client birth moment that’s stayed with you.
Tracy: There are many birth moments that have stayed with me, but the ones I think of most often are when I’ve been with someone who felt they were on the edge of losing control, when fear or pain was starting to take over. In those moments, the smallest things can make the biggest difference: a calm word, a steady tone, a reassuring hand. I’ve seen the shift as their breathing steadies, their shoulders release, and they find their rhythm again. Watching someone move from panic back into their own strength is incredibly powerful, and for me, it captures the very essence of what doula support is all about.
MM: If there’s one thing you could change about maternity care, what would it be?
Tracy: If I could change one thing about maternity care, it would be the culture that too often treats birth as something to be managed rather than experienced. At the heart of this is informed choice: women deserve clear, balanced information and genuine support for their decisions, whether that’s about induction, place of birth, or pain relief. But informed choice can’t exist without individualised care, recognising that no two people, pregnancies, or labours are the same, and that what feels right for one may not feel right for another. Ultimately, we need a cultural shift that moves away from rigid pathways and towards care that prioritises respect, dignity, and partnership. When maternity services are built on these foundations, the difference for families is profound.
Exactly! Thank you Tracy, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
